ABSTRACT

PurposeCOVID-19 and its measures such as physical distancing have shifted consumer payment behaviors toward cashless payment. Physical distancing is likely to remain a norm for some time to come and will be relevant in any future pandemics. This study aims to examine the impact of consumers' perceived value of cashless payment on their use intention in the physical distancing context, with the mediating role of psychological safety and the moderating role of trust propensity.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a survey method to obtain data from 690 consumers in an Asian emerging market, i.e. Vietnam. The data were analyzed using different statistical methods, including structural equation modeling.FindingsResults show that perceived value of cashless payment positively affects use intention, and this effect is mediated by psychological safety. Furthermore, trust propensity has a positive moderating effect on the link between perceived value and psychological safety.Practical implicationsThis study's findings provide implications for retailers and other stakeholders in implementing and promoting cashless payment systems, especially in the physical distancing context.Originality/valueThis study is among the first attempt to explain the relationships between consumers' perceptions, feelings of psychological safety and use intention toward cashless payment in the physical distancing context. The study's findings may also be relevant to any future pandemics.

ABSTRACT

Leisure trips have become more important in an era where people are increasingly concerned with quality of life. Leisure trips are unique in that they are not as strict as mandatory trips, while, at the same time, they have wider characteristics because of their flexibility. Research on leisure trips from developing countries is still under-represented as there is still a focus on commuting trips. This study aims to identify factors that influence the mode of transportation choice for leisure trips by domestic travelers who live in cities surrounding Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected using stated-preference self-report questionnaires distributed to locals who have the intention to travel for leisure in Bandung in the future. Based on responses from 305 respondents with a total number of 1220 observations, a multinomial logit model was estimated. It was found that trains and buses were selected more often by locals than other modes of transportation, including private cars, for leisure trips. Our model showed that locals considered travel time and travel costs as the most significant factors in selecting the mode of transportation for their leisure trips. Besides the existence of online transportation—hailing rides through mobile apps—as an alternative, this study also reveals payment method to be a unique consideration of locals when travelling leisurely in this digital era.

ABSTRACT

The Fourth Industrial Revolution created many opportunities in many industrial sectors to cope with the digital transformation emergence. The financial industry quickly developed mobile cashless payment transaction systems (e-wallets) that went viral and have been widely used. Compared with traditional payment services, cashless payments offer other advantages encouraging users to utilize the technology more often. In addition, Covid-19 accelerated the adoption of e-wallets as social distancing, and contactless transactions have been advised in response to limit the transition of the virus between people. Accordingly, this research is aimed to identify the main factors that encourage users to adopt e-wallet systems and the main concerns of the cashless technology before and during Covid-19. This research used the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to answer the research questions that rolled around identifying these factors. The papers were selected between 2018 and 2022 as a representation of before and during Covid-19. The analysis of the chosen literature highlighted 31 total factors, 21 factors about e-wallet usage and 10 factors about technology concerns. Based on the identified factors, this paper can be useful for e-wallet technology practitioners in the field to provide better cashless payment services. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The article discusses the subject of the consumer's gender and factors that affect shopping, and more specifically whether there is a relationship between gender and preferred means of payment in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. I explore the relationship between cash and other payment instruments using the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic as a natural experiment exogenously affecting both the payment industry and consumers' habits. This article sheds more light on changing the payment habits of consumers since the beginning of the pandemic. The purpose of this article is to examine the styles of payment-related decision making and to identify differences and similarities in this regard according to gender. Women are different from men in every activity they perform, and therefore also in shopping styles. Consumer behaviour is an area in which the diversity of behaviour between men and women is very clear. The author conducted an empirical study in the period of January-February 2022 among the students of the University of the Third Age. The study participants were women and men over 55 years of age. The basic research method was the PAPI (Paper and Pencil Interview) method, based on a questionnaire. In the first part of the article, it was attempted to present some theoretical aspects of payment methods by consumers in Poland and in Europe, based on the analysis of literature sources. Then, the gender-dependent differences in consumer behaviour are presented. The next section describes the procedure of empirical research, as well as the most important conclusions of the research. © 2022, Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. ABSTRACT

In this research, we investigated the recent trend of the diffusion of cashless payment in Japan by using the survey data of students in our institute during 2018 and 2021. Cashless payment has achieved remarkable development with the wide usage of smartphones and the prevalence of consequent smartphone-based system. Before the bar code, either two- and single-dimensional, was introduced in the cashless system, the major technology that was used is a smart card or integrated circuit card-based system. We investigated the behavior of technology adoptions to cashless payment, which we called "Smart Payment System"in 2018[5]. Since 2018, we conducted surveys and found that the effect of COVID-19 resulted in the increase adoption to the cashless payment system among students and the increase usage of credit cards. The survey showed that the use of cashless payment system increased after 2020 in comparison to 2018 and 2019. Since the COVID-19 pandemic in spring of 2020, the usage of online shopping increased, and the usage of real stores decreased. Although we did not use big data, such as the log data of mobile phone usages, the results indicated that our observation of the use of cashless payment system among young users is consistent with the common sense. © 2021 ACM.
